The Department of State Services (DSS) has warned that certain elements are planning to incite unrest in the country. This alert follows a similar warning issued two weeks earlier, which urged political actors to adhere to the rules of engagement and to seek judicial redress when they suspect violations of existing electoral laws.
In a statement on Saturday, DSS spokesperson Peter Afunanya noted that while some political figures have pursued legal remedies, others are making inflammatory statements. He said, “The Department of State Services again alerts the public to plans that could violently disrupt peace in the country. We warn those intent on breaking law and order to desist.” Afunanya added that some aggrieved politicians are already exploiting the legal process, describing this as “the beauty of democracy” that enhances peace and security, and urging everyone to cherish it.
Afunanya also cautioned against the spread of fake news aimed at turning citizens against the current or incoming administrations, stating that the DSS will not allow the nation to descend into anarchy. He emphasized that the agency will not tolerate individuals or groups taking the law into their own hands or promoting anarchy. “Those peddling fake news, hate speech, and false narratives to incite violence or pit people against the present or future administrations—at the federal, state, and parliamentary levels—must stop immediately,” he said.
He warned that inciting violence benefits no one; it harms both the instigators and innocent citizens. It is disturbing to see respected personalities using their platforms to mislead or provoke the public, a trend that threatens peaceful coexistence and public order.
