Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki announced that his administration is committed to developing a new airport in Auchi, located in the Edo North Senatorial District, after receiving tentative approval from the Federal Government. Speaking to journalists in Auchi over the weekend, Obaseki said the government is collaborating with aviation experts to finalize the airport’s survey.

“The charting of the airport is already ongoing to ensure the safety measures required for approval of the airport project, as safety is the main consideration,” he explained. “We want to make sure that the approaches for landing on the runway are clear and safe, and will not endanger the aircraft. These are the final reports and studies being conducted, and as soon as we get final approval, we will break ground and commence construction of the Auchi Airport,” the governor reassured.

Obaseki emphasized that the project is not political. “Between Benin City and Abuja on this axis, which is more than 600 km, there is no airport. From a transportation standpoint, it makes a lot of commercial sense to have an airport in Edo North.” He highlighted the region’s growing economic activities, noting emerging businesses in mining and academia, as well as two cement companies producing over 6 million tonnes of cement along this corridor, all of which support the need for an airport in the area.
