The Lagos State government has granted Chrisland High School’s Opebi branch permission to resume physical learning ahead of the upcoming examinations, following an appeal by parents. The school had been ordered to close on March 3, 2023, by Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu after an investigation into the death of 12‑year‑old student Whitney Adeniran.
Sanwo‑Olu, speaking through the State Ministry of Education, said the closure was intended to allow an unhindered investigation and give all stakeholders—including parents, students, staff and friends of the deceased—time to grieve. He noted that, given the circumstances of the child’s death, the Lagos State Attorney‑General and Commissioner for Justice ordered a coroner’s inquest to determine the cause.
The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital performed the autopsy on February 15. It was conducted by Prof. Sunday Soyemi, Consultant Pathologist at LASUTH, in the presence of Dr. Samuel Keshinro, Consultant Pathologist representing the family, and Dr. Olugbenga Oyewole, Consultant Pathologist representing Chrisland Schools. The autopsy report, dated March 1, identified asphyxia and electrocution as the cause of death.
Following the report, the Attorney‑General and Commissioner for Justice directed the Directorate of Public Prosecutions to issue legal advice on the matter. He added that, without prejudice to any criminal proceedings, the school will remain closed while the endangerment of students and others is further examined.
