Senator Chimaroke Nnamani, who represents Enugu East and is a former governor of Enugu State, has called on Senator Iyorchia Ayu to vacate the office of National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) immediately, describing Ayu’s “deception and abysmal performance” as “unmitigated.” Nnamani argued that Ayu’s leadership has brought misfortune to the party, calling him “an unmitigated disaster” and “an evil that befell the PDP.” He said the only option left is to show Ayu “the exit door.”

Nnamani questioned Ayu’s reliance on Section 57(7) of the PDP constitution to defend his position, noting that Ayu had previously “flagrantly subverted” the same provision to sack key party stakeholders, including Nnamani himself. Section 57(7) states: “Notwithstanding any other provision relating to discipline, no executive committee at any level, except the National Executive Committee, shall entertain any question of discipline as may relate or concern a member of the National Executive Committee, Deputy Governors or members of the National Assembly.” Nnamani recalled that the Ayu‑led National Working Committee used this section to expel him, even though it lacked the authority to do so, and likened Ayu’s current case to “the evil that men do lives with them.”

He further asserted that Ayu lacks the moral right to remain in office any longer. “If he still has any modicum of honour, he should quit immediately,” Nnamani said, adding that Ayu has brought shame to the PDP by sacking or forcing the departure of numerous key stakeholders. Consequently, Nnamani urged the National Executive Committee and the Party’s Board of Trustees to intervene and remove Ayu to prevent the party’s “complete extinction.”

Reports indicate that Ayu’s suspension was announced on Sunday by the ward executive of the party in Igyorov Ward, Gboko Local Government Area, Benue State. The announcement was made by secretary Vangeryina Dooyum on behalf of ward chairman Kashi Philip, citing alleged anti‑party activities. While Ayu responded defiantly, citing the party’s constitution, a High Court in Makurdi issued an interim injunction restraining him from presenting himself as the PDP’s National Chairman. Justice W.I. Kpochi granted the order on Monday in suit No. MHC/85/2023, filed by Terhide Utaan with Ayu and the PDP named as defendants.
