The organizers of the FESTAC Africa festival have announced that legendary band Les Wanyika will be among the performers at this year’s event. In a statement, chairman Yinka Abioye said the festival will take place in Arusha, Tanzania, from May 21 to 27, 2023, and described the band’s appearance as a homecoming. Attendees can look forward to timeless songs such as “Sina Makosa,” “Amigo,” “Afro,” and others. “Fun seekers will be transported to yesteryears by a band that will be very present in the moment,” Abioye added, calling the performance a renaissance of Les Wanyika’s past accomplishments.
From its inception, FESTAC was founded on the acknowledgment, understanding, and appreciation of the social capital inherent in African peoples. This capital is expressed through music, art, cuisine, fashion, creative writing, sports, and business. Les Wanyika will share the stage with South African artists in an epic salute to the brotherhood, courage, and unparalleled support of Tanzania and other nations. Despite having attained their own independence, these countries recognize that if any African nation is not yet “uhuru,” none of us are.
FESTAC Africa aims to present Black and African cultures, highlight the diverse contributions of African people, promote African artists and performers, and facilitate global acceptance and access for Africans in the arts. The festival strives to foster better international and interracial understanding of Africa’s cultural rhythm and talent, while encouraging artists, writers, and performers living abroad to periodically return to their African origins.
