The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) issued certificates of return on Wednesday to Abia State Governor‑elect Dr. Alex Otti and his deputy, Mr. Agwu, eleven days after INEC declared Otti the winner of the March 18 governorship election. The certificates were presented by INEC National Commissioner Festus Okoye at the commission’s state headquarters in Umuahia, the state capital.
Commissioner Okoye emphasized that conducting a good, verifiable election that meets national and international standards is a multi‑faceted effort; no single institution can achieve it alone. He noted that democracy thrives when it is nurtured to advance society and praised the people of Abia for their commitment to and protection of democratic institutions. He also commended the media for its role in delivering credible polls.
Governor‑elect Otti described the presentation of the certificates as the final step in his journey with INEC following his election victory. He lauded the electoral body for a job well done and thanked incumbent Governor Okezie Ikpeazu for his magnanimity in urging no litigation. Extending an olive branch, Otti invited those who contested the election to join him in developing the state. He also urged anyone who has misappropriated funds or government property to return them immediately, stating that Abia will not be used as collateral.
