Award‑winning hip‑hop artists Falz and Vector have slammed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its “inadequacies” in the recently concluded 2023 elections. In a track titled “Yakubu,” the rappers criticize INEC chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu for alleged malpractices that characterized the vote. Released Thursday, the song references the commission’s failed promise to transmit election results in real time via its IReV portal.

The duo also highlights reports of violence, voter intimidation, logistical problems, ballot‑box snatching and other incidents that marred the 2023 general election. In the first verse, Falz raps: “Mr Yakubu! Ę ma ń se bi fraudster (you behave like a fraudster) / you don’t want to prosper / Come and collect Oscar / 300 billion te gbà lówó ìjoba, kí le fi se ná sir (what did you do with the 300 billion received from the government).”

Falz is no stranger to politically conscious and satirical music aimed at the government. In August 2018, the National Broadcasting Corporation banned his hit “This Is Nigeria” from the airwaves. The record, which sampled Childish Gambino’s “This Is America,” was deemed “vulgar” and “unfit for radio” because of the line, “This is Nigeria / Look how we living now / Everybody be criminal.”
