The Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency announced on Thursday that it had seized 228 kg of cannabis sativa, also known as Indian hemp. The agency paraded the suspect, Ayodele Osuya, who was allegedly arrested on Wednesday in the state capital with the drug.

State commander Kayode Raji explained that men of the command had been tracking Osuya for a long time. Speaking at the command headquarters, he disclosed that the suspect had concealed the Indian hemp in the boot of a Toyota Camry, a haul worth several million naira. “We have been on his trail for a very long time,” Raji said. “At one point we suspected he was becoming aware that he was being followed, so we lay low and used a variety of techniques to conceal our identity. On 29 March, he was finally nabbed at the Quarter Guard Area in Akure, Ondo State.”

Raji added that the suspect was found with “compressed cannabis, carefully stacked in the boot of the car—about 309 pieces, weighing roughly 228 kg, which is a huge amount.” He emphasized that dealing in or cultivating cannabis is harmful to everyone, calling it “evil” and urging people to stay away from it. “Either you get out of the state or you get out of the business,” he concluded.
