Buba Galadima, a prominent figure in the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has suggested that discussions about a potential alliance between his party’s presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, may be revisited. According to Media Talk Africa, previous negotiations aimed at forming an alliance ahead of the 2023 election did not reach a consensus, primarily due to disagreements over which candidate would withdraw from the presidential race to take on the role of running mate.
In an interview with Daily Independent, Galadima expressed hope for renewed discussions between the two parties before the upcoming election. He conveyed his disappointment regarding the NNPP’s inability to finalize an agreement with the Labour Party, stating that a successful alliance would have likely ensured a decisive victory by noon on election day.
When reflecting on the unsuccessful negotiations, Galadima acknowledged his role in chairing the meeting and confirmed his disappointment. He remarked, “If that union had taken place, the election of Nigeria on February 25, 2023 would have ended by 12pm. In fact, some of us would have been in Dubai or Paris dining when we would be told that we have won the election.” He highlighted that ego played a significant role in the discussions and emphasized that public statements do not always accurately represent the complexities of political negotiations. Despite the setbacks, Galadima remains optimistic about the possibility of future talks between the two parties.
