The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has rejected the reason given by Governor Ademola Adeleke for the delay in paying March salaries to government workers. In a statement, the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, attributed the delay to the ongoing computation of promotion arrears for civil servants who were promoted without pay over the past four years. However, Osun APC acting Chairman Tajudeen Lawal called this explanation “flimsy and untenable,” accusing the governor of fabricating it to deceive workers. Lawal noted that former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola had already paid the promotion arrears he inherited, and he criticized Adeleke for failing to keep his campaign promise of paying salaries no later than the 26th of each month.
Lawal further argued that Adeleke has squandered the funds inherited from his predecessor and those accrued during his tenure, leaving the government unable to meet salary obligations. He emphasized that a gentleman’s bond is his word, recalling Adeleke’s pledge during the campaign that he would never exceed the 26th of the month before paying workers.
In response, Osun PDP acting chairman Dr Adekunle Akindele described the APC’s reaction as financially illiterate. He asserted that workers understand the delay’s purpose: to ensure payment of long‑awaited promotion arrears that the previous APC government denied them. Akindele said workers will soon receive alerts starting Monday and expressed appreciation for Governor Adeleke’s “innovative and shrewd handling” of the state’s finances, which addresses basic needs and critical infrastructure.
Akindele highlighted that after four years of failing to pay promotion arrears, contributory pensions, and half salaries, the APC is now embarrassed by the “sterling records” of Adeleke’s administration, which include clearing the messy legacy of the previous government. He concluded that the APC’s criticisms are unfounded vituperations and a false alarm on Osun’s finances.
