Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti admitted that missing striker Victor Osimhen will be a major blow for the team. The 24‑year‑old forward suffered an abductor strain, confirmed by tests, and will miss Napoli’s home clash against AC Milan on Sunday. Osimhen has been absent from training since returning from international duty, where he featured in both legs of Nigeria’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea‑Bissau.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Spalletti looked ahead to the first match after the international break and acknowledged that Napoli will have to cope without their talisman. “We’ve got a triple‑header coming up against Milan. Being without Osimhen is a big blow, but Giovanni Simeone has proved his worth. He’s a striker who can use his head or his feet,” the coach said, according to an interview published on the club’s website.
Spalletti emphasized that the team has shown resilience in Osimhen’s absence, citing recent victories and the contributions of players like Cholito. “When we’re without Victor, the team has been able to make up for it and come out winners. This team can handle anyone being missing because everyone has given something extra this year and we’ve played really well, even against top opposition,” he added.
Regarding tactics, Spalletti said little will change. “Giovanni can go deep, protect the ball, be involved in link‑up play and score goals. Obviously, Osimhen is very quick, and you don’t get them much quicker than that. Simeone deserves more minutes, but it’s tough when you have a star like Osimhen in the squad.” He concluded with confidence, noting Milan’s strength as reigning champions, recent Champions League success, and squad reinforcements: “We’re fully aware that we’re facing a very good side.”
