The Kogi State Police Command has arrested prime suspect Arome Danjuma for allegedly ambushing and stripping a girl naked in a video that went viral. Danjuma and an accomplice, who remains at large, are said to have carried out the assault in Achigili village near Abocho, within the Dekina Local Government Area. Police Public Relations Officer SP William Aya briefed journalists at the command headquarters in Lokoja on Saturday, stating that investigations are ongoing to apprehend the other suspect. The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, and the state PPRO affirmed that the perpetrators will face the full force of the law and will soon be charged in court.
The survivor, who identified herself as Alami, recounted that one of the men had previously proposed marriage, which she refused. She said, “When I left work around 8 p.m. on Sunday, 19 May, he attacked me, forced me to his house, and began beating me. Another person was waiting in the house with a knife and an axe, threatening to kill me if I didn’t remove my clothes. I had no choice but to obey, or they would have killed me. After I stripped, they filmed my nakedness and later posted the video on the internet. They just want to destroy my life.” During an interview, Danjuma confessed to the crime, acknowledging that he conspired with his friend to carry out the atrocity.
Reacting to the case, the Commissioner of Women Affairs—represented by the Director of Research, Planning and Statistics, Ministry of Women Affairs, and Secretary of the Kogi State GBV Technical Workgroup, Mr. Oseni Isaac—described the incident as one of the most barbaric in recent times, calling it “animalistic” and unacceptable in the state. Isaac emphasized that the ministry is committed to combating gender‑based violence and warned that such acts will no longer be tolerated in Kogi State.
Similarly, Executive Director of the Challenged Parenthood Initiative, Eunice Agbogun, condemned the act as “the height of gender‑based violence” and a serious crime against humanity. She praised the police for securing the arrest, affirmed that justice must prevail, and pledged to follow the case closely, noting that it sends a strong warning to other perpetrators that gender‑based violence will no longer be treated as business as usual.
