A Partner at KPMG Nigeria, Yemi Kale, has advocated for increased deployment of technology to ensure credible data gathering in the country. Kale, a former Statistician‑General at the National Bureau of Statistics, spoke at the 2023 edition of “Experiencing PR,” an annual conference organized by Nigerian Women in Public Relations. The event brought together professional women, students, small‑ and medium‑scale business owners, and start‑ups, both in person and virtually.

When asked how to guarantee the credibility of data generated by the National Bureau of Statistics and other agencies, Kale emphasized technology as the most important tool. “The most important thing is the use of technology. When technology is available it can be difficult to alter it because the data is transferred immediately to the head offices,” he said. He urged Nigerians to help ensure access to reliable data by cooperating with the relevant government agencies.

Kale noted that a major obstacle in the past was a lack of cooperation, with some businesses fearing misuse of their information. “One of the problems back then was lack of cooperation; some businesses were afraid because they did not know what the purpose of the data was meant for,” he explained. He illustrated this with an example: “If I ask you how old you are, you might think the answer could bring some incentive, so the information you provide will be used, and that can have a negative effect on the data gathered.”

In her opening speech, Tolulope Olorundero, the founder of Nigerian Women in PR, said the organization was founded in 2019 to stimulate knowledge for women practicing public relations.
