Former English professional footballer Rio Ferdinand has shared his thoughts on Manchester United’s performance against Premier League rivals Liverpool. In his analysis, the former Red Devils defender, now a sports pundit, praised three players who he believed were instrumental in helping United secure a victory over Jurgen Klopp’s team in their league clash on Monday night.

According to Media Talk Africa, Liverpool suffered a 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford, marking their first loss of the 2022/2023 EPL season. Goals from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford allowed United to achieve their first league win of the season after previously losing to Brighton and Brentford. Although Mohamed Salah scored for Liverpool, giving them hope for an equalizer, their efforts fell short against Erik ten Hag’s side.

In his post-match commentary, Ferdinand highlighted the performances of Rashford, Raphael Varane, and Lisandro Martinez. He remarked, “Rashford looked like something we were used to seeing from years ago,” emphasizing the forward’s energy, ability to make runs behind the defense, and his relentless pursuit of the ball. Ferdinand also noted the team’s pressing and shape as positive aspects of their performance.

Additionally, he praised the two center-backs, stating, “The two centre-halves were outstanding. I thought [Raphael] Varane was brilliant in the first half, covering well throughout the game.” He described Lisandro Martinez as aggressive and effective, comparing him to Gabriel Heinze, though he noted that Martinez may not be as rash. Ferdinand expressed optimism about Martinez’s potential, saying, “If he can perform to the standard today, what a big signing he could be.”
