Suspected herdsmen launched another attack on Umogidi, Entekpa Adoka district in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, killing three people. This incident occurred barely a day after suspected herders killed three individuals at Igbobi in Apa LGA of the same state.
A resident who identified himself as Sunny said the suspected herders invaded the community on Tuesday evening. “The herders came into our village yesterday (Tuesday) evening and they shot sporadically, which led to people fleeing the community,” he explained. “When they left, three dead bodies were recovered, and one of the boys killed was an agent of the Peoples Democratic Party in the last election.”
The Chairman of Otukpo LGA, Bako Eje, confirmed the attack and killings to journalists on Wednesday. He said the herders had been terrorising the area for over a month, stating, “For over a month now, they have been terrorising our people in that axis, from Igili to Umogidi across Enetekpa ward. The attackers came in from Apa through Agatu. They graze their cows in our area, eat our cassava, grains and yams, and the ones they cannot eat they set on fire. Most of our people have deserted the place and are now camping at a primary school in Adoka, particularly those from Igili and Umogidi. Yesterday (Tuesday) they came on us, attacked, and killed three persons.”
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer for the state, Catherine Anene, confirmed the attack, saying, “Attack confirmed. No details yet.”
