Frank Lampard is set to return to Chelsea for a second spell as interim manager until the end of the season, reports said on Wednesday. The former England international was dismissed by Everton earlier this season and previously left Chelsea in 2021 after an 18‑month tenure. Sky Sports and The Athletic indicate that the club and Lampard are in advanced talks, aiming to have him in charge for Saturday’s match at Wolves.
Chelsea dismissed Graham Potter on Sunday following a disastrous run that left the team 11th in the Premier League, despite spending over £500 million ($623 million) on new players in their first season under the new owners. Nevertheless, the club remains in the Champions League quarter‑finals and will travel to defending champions Real Madrid for the first leg of their last‑eight tie in seven days.
Lampard attended Chelsea’s 0‑0 home draw with Liverpool on Tuesday and is the figure the American owners have turned to in hopes of sparking a short‑term turnaround. In his 13‑year playing career at Chelsea, Lampard won three Premier League titles, the Champions League and became the club’s all‑time leading scorer. As manager, the 44‑year‑old guided Chelsea to fourth place in the Premier League and an FA Cup final in his first season, but was sacked midway through his second season, after which Thomas Tuchel led the team to Champions League glory.
After helping Everton avoid relegation last season, Lampard was dismissed in January with the Toffees near the bottom of the table. Among the leading candidates for Chelsea’s permanent managerial role are recently sacked Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann and former Barcelona and Spain coach Luis Enrique.
