Thabo Bester’s mother, Maria Mabaso, told eNCA that she lives in constant fear after receiving death threats following her son’s escape from the Mangaung Correctional Centre last year. She said she is terrified of Bester and his allies, citing threatening phone calls and suspicious vehicles that stop at her gate. Mabaso also confirmed that DNA evidence found in Bester’s cell did not match him. Bester, known as the “Facebook rapist,” had been sentenced to life for rape and murder before faking his death in a fire in his cell.

Road‑safety officials have ramped up measures for the Easter weekend, according to TimesLive. The N3 Toll Concession expects up to 2,500 vehicles per hour on the highway from Gauteng to KwaZulu‑Natal and has deployed satellite stations, increased law‑enforcement presence, road‑traffic management, and emergency services. Despite the heavy traffic, regions such as Durban and the south coast of KwaZulu‑Natal are ready to welcome visitors, and beaches in those areas have been declared safe for swimming.

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) has called for a collective effort to stop criminal activity in the city’s cemeteries after ash‑wall vandalism at Braamfontein Cemetery, reported TimesLive. JCPZ urges collaboration with the city police, metro police, the Department of Social Development, park rangers, security firms, and community groups. Sarah Welham, founder of the Friends of Cemeteries organisation, expressed shock at the unprecedented damage. JCPZ says it is working with stakeholders to develop both immediate and long‑term solutions, including relocating people who have taken up residence in the cemeteries.
