The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) says its preparations for the July plebiscite are progressing well, with close to six million voters already registered. ZEC chairperson Priscilla Chigumba testified before a joint thematic Committee on Peace and Security and the Justice Portfolio Parliamentary Committee on Wednesday. She affirmed that the commission is ready for the 2023 harmonised elections and has received adequate financing from the treasury.
Chigumba explained that voter registration will continue until two days after President Emmerson Mnangagwa proclaims the election date. “To date, almost six million voters have been registered,” she said, adding that anyone may register or change their polling station up to that deadline. She also noted that an inspection of the voters’ roll will take place after the registration period closes. “We will announce the final number of eligible voters only after all verification processes and roll inspections are completed,” she said.
Regarding funding, Chigumba could not provide specific figures but confirmed that ZEC is well‑resourced by the treasury for an election that requires $130 billion. She acknowledged that occasional delays in treasury disbursements have slowed some processes, but affirmed that the commission remains on track to fulfill its mandate in accordance with the law.
