A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano, Muazu Dansarauniya, has urged the party’s leadership to appoint a Senate president from the North‑West, specifically Kano, to strengthen the APC’s base in the region amid challenges from opposition parties. Speaking to journalists in Kano, he dismissed criticism from New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) spokesman and House of Representatives‑elect Abdulmumin Kofa, who claimed that allocating the Senate presidency to the north would be a disservice to the nation. Dansarauniya argued that it is democratic for the APC to ensure the Senate presidency goes to the North‑West, the political heartbeat of the North.

He noted that, despite the APC’s contribution to the election of President‑elect Bola Ahmad Tinubu, the party currently has only one senator from Kano State, Sen. Barau Jibril. Failing to elevate Jibril to Senate president, Dansarauniya warned, would weaken the party’s influence in the region. He described the NNPP’s stance as a deliberate attempt to prevent the APC from securing strong political leadership in the North, thereby allowing the NNPP to dominate regional politics. Consequently, he called on the APC leadership to support Jibril’s bid for Senate president, creating a rallying point for the party in the North‑West and the broader North.

Dansarauniya highlighted that the presidency has gone to the APC’s partners in the Southwest, the vice‑presidency to partners in the Northeast, and therefore the largest voting bloc— the North‑West— deserves the Senate presidency. He interpreted the NNPP’s claim that a northern candidate “has no love for Nigeria” as a strategy to monopolize the region’s politics. He urged the APC’s national chairman and the president‑elect to adhere to the president’s vision of a competent national government, emphasizing that Sen. Barau Jibril is the appropriate candidate from Kano.

Addressing members from other geopolitical zones, Dansarauniya called for hard work and dedication to the party, promising recognition and rewards. He stressed that democracy’s principal rule is participation: “You cannot participate and then ask for a reward.” He urged those seeking rewards to organize and contribute to the party’s success in the next election, noting that 2027 is near. By working diligently, he assured, they will receive their fair share of recognition and reward.
