The Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Solomon Arase, has instructed police officers to refrain from intervening in land disputes and debt‑recovery matters, urging that such issues be handled by Alternative Dispute Resolution centres. He also pledged that the commission will punish any officer who engages in misconduct or infringes on citizens’ rights.
The announcement came in a statement released on Friday by Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations at the PSC. Arase made the remarks while receiving the national leadership of the Police Community Relations Committee, where he affirmed his commitment to work with Inspector‑General of Police Usman Baba to restructure the force for improved performance.
Arase emphasized that for the Nigeria Police Force to excel in its daily operations, there must be clear consequences for misconduct and rewards for exemplary behaviour. He stressed that benefits and responsibilities must go hand in hand and that he will support existing police efforts to ensure operations adhere to established rules of engagement.
He reiterated that police have no justification for involving themselves in land disputes, debt collection, or similar matters, which should be resolved through alternative dispute‑resolution mechanisms. Arase promised to remain a strong advocate for community partnership in policing.
Mogaji Olaniya, National Chairman of the Police Community Relations Committee, praised Arase’s appointment, stating, “You are the best for the job.”
