A suspected kidnapper died on Thursday during a gunfight with police in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State. The shootout also led to the rescue of two abducted victims who had been abandoned by the kidnappers at their hideout.
City Round reported that the deceased kidnapper and his gang abducted several people in the community on March 26. After the abductions, the suspects contacted the victims’ families and demanded a N20 million ransom for their release. While the families were negotiating, they informed the Lagos State Police Command, prompting police to investigate and plan a rescue.
On the agreed ransom‑payment day, the kidnappers saw that police were accompanying the families to the meeting point and opened fire. State Police Public Relations Officer SP Benjamin Hundeyin said the police returned fire, killing one of the suspects and rescuing the two victims. He confirmed, “Two victims were rescued and one of the suspects was killed during a gun duel with the police.”
Hundeyin explained that the kidnappers had originally demanded N20 million, but the families had negotiated the amount down to N3 million. When the police learned of the plan, they began an immediate investigation. On April 4, the kidnappers attempted an ambush upon spotting the police; the police countered, killing one kidnapper while the others fled, after which the two victims were rescued.
