The Peoples Democratic Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, warned that “we must not allow those who seek to divide us to pretend as if our problems are a result of another ethnic or religious group.” Speaking after joining Nigerian leaders to celebrate Christians this Easter, Atiku described the holiday as a period of deep reflection, marking the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and his triumph over death.
He called the occasion a time to reach out to brothers and sisters in need and urged people of all faiths and ethnicities to unite in prayer for the nation’s peace. “We must remain constant in our efforts to promote unity across all lines,” he wrote on his verified Facebook page on Saturday. “United, our nation is stronger, and we can thrive as a people.”
Atiku emphasized that shared experiences show Nigerians can overcome any evil forces when they act together for good. He appealed to leaders at every level to embody the season’s virtues—sacrifice, love, and charity—and to help resolve the differences that divide the country. Ultimately, he urged Nigerians to collectively own their problems and work together to find solutions.
