Pope Francis is expected to celebrate the Easter Sunday Mass in St. Peter’s Square in Rome on Sunday morning, with tens of thousands of faithful anticipated to attend. The Vatican’s gendarmerie reported that around 60,000 people participated in the Palm Sunday Mass last weekend.
On Easter Sunday, Christians commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, celebrating the triumph of life over death. After the traditional Mass on the most important feast day of the Catholic Church, the pontiff will deliver the customary “Urbi et Orbi” blessing—Latin for “to the city and the world”—from the central loggia.
The Holy See announced that, to express the joy of the resurrection, the forecourt of St. Peter’s Basilica will be transformed into a flower garden, adorned with approximately 35,000 flowers and plants from the Netherlands.
