Nairobi — Kenya’s first operational 3U Earth observation satellite, Taifa‑1, has had its launch delayed by one day after Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX) warned that unfavorable upper‑level wind conditions would affect the flight trajectory of the Falcon 9 Transporter 7 mission. The launch was originally scheduled for Monday, 10 April 2023 at 11:44 p.m. Pacific Time (Tuesday, 11 April 2023 at 9:44 a.m. Kenyan time). Taifa‑1, together with other satellites from various nations, was to fly on the Transporter 7 rideshare mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The new launch window is set for Tuesday, 11 April 2023 at 11:44 p.m. Pacific Time (Wednesday, 12 April 2023 at 9:44 a.m. Kenyan time).
The Kenya Space Agency (KSA) and the Defence Ministry announced that the satellite will deliver timely, regular data to support agriculture and food security, natural resources management, disaster response, and environmental monitoring, among other applications. The launch culminates a 24‑month mission design and development effort led by Kenyan engineers. While the satellite’s design and development were carried out locally, manufacturing of parts, testing, and qualification were performed in collaboration with EnduroSat AD, a Bulgarian aerospace manufacturer. Kenyan team members received customized training in the space environment, orbital mechanics, space systems engineering, space operations, and project management to ensure the mission could withstand the harsh conditions of space.
According to KSA and the Defence Ministry, the project involved research and development of satellite mission components, the full satellite development cycle, in‑orbit control, and data reception and processing. Over three months, the team defined specific objectives, technical requirements, design specifications, cost analyses, and documentation procedures for Taifa‑1. Data from the 3U Earth observation satellite will complement existing open‑source information, providing decision‑support to stakeholders that rely on space‑derived, data‑driven solutions and contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
KSA describes the Taifa‑1 mission as a pivotal milestone for Kenya’s space programme, expected to stimulate growth in satellite development, data analytics, processing, and application development within the emerging Kenyan space economy. Taifa‑1 is the first step toward a planned constellation of small Earth observation satellites for Kenya and serves as a capacity‑building initiative for Kenyan engineers in space systems engineering, operations, ground‑station management, mission control, and satellite data acquisition and processing.
A Kenyan government delegation led by the Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Patrick Mariru, is in the United States to witness the launch. KSA’s technical team will monitor the mission from its Nairobi headquarters.
