The Coordinator of the National Democratic Coalition Renewal Group, Prof. Atilade Adeeyo, condemned a letter written by Nigerian writer Chimamanda Adichie to U.S. President Joe Biden regarding the February 25 presidential election won by All Progressives Congress candidate Bola Tinubu. In her letter, Adichie faulted the United States for congratulating Tinubu, alleging that his victory resulted from an unlawful process marked by irregularities, violence, and a compromised electoral umpire.
NADECO Renewal argued that Adichie’s outburst revealed an ethnic bias in a matter of national importance. The group urged President Biden to disregard the letter entirely, describing its content as “childish, seditious and illogical.” In a statement titled “Ignore Adichie’s childish, seditious, illogical ranting, NADECO Renewal tells Biden,” released in Ado Ekiti, Adeeyo characterized Adichie’s message as “illogical reasoning regarding the ensuing political development in Nigeria and ignorance of the electoral umpire’s operations.”
The group further claimed that the letter exposed Adichie’s “true colour” as an ethnically biased Nigerian masquerading as a writer who pretentiously preaches patriotism while approaching national issues through a narrow ethnic lens. NADECO Renewal advised the “ever‑busy” U.S. president to ignore Adichie’s ethnically influenced letter, noting that it stems from a shallow understanding of the electoral laws governing the process.
Finally, the group criticized Adichie’s claim that the February 25 poll was illegitimate, stating that only a competent court of law has the authority to determine the election’s legality. They described her assessment as a “pathetic gaffe” from a “lady of letters.”
