As the planting season begins in Ondo State, agro‑allied firm Outspan Nigeria Limited has donated 2.2 million cocoa seedlings to local farmers. The donation, made at the flag‑off ceremony for the 2023 cropping season in Imafon Community, Akure South Local Government Area, is part of the company’s partnership with the state government to help farmers achieve higher quality and quantity cocoa harvests.
Miss Agatha Ewolor, Head of Sustainability for Olam Food and Ingredients at Outspan Nigeria Limited, said the contribution reflects the firm’s corporate responsibility and sustainability commitment to supporting farmers and the broader business environment. “We will continue to do this as long as we can. Last year we donated 2.2 million cocoa seedlings, and we have done the same this year. It is something we will always do,” she explained. Ewolor emphasized the importance of partnering with the Ondo State Government, noting that collaboration ensures the impact reaches the farmers directly.
Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, who declared the programme open, explained that the event aims to provide farmers with detailed information on the 2023 farming activities and to introduce key government interventions in agriculture. Represented by Deputy Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa, the governor highlighted the government’s efforts to alleviate challenges facing farmers by creating a conducive environment for agricultural enterprises. He noted that the establishment of the Amotekun Corps has reduced the risk of harassment or attacks on farmers, thereby enhancing security for lives and property.
The governor also outlined upcoming initiatives, including the rehabilitation of rural roads to improve access to farming communities and facilitate the transport of produce, which will help reduce post‑harvest losses. He warned against encroachment and illegal activities on government land and forest reserves, stating, “We shall not fold our arms and watch people plunder our forest resources and convert our commonwealth to personal use and gains.”
State Commissioner for Agriculture Olayato Aribo described the occasion as an annual event that educates farmers about opportunities in improved crop varieties, livestock, planting materials, and good agricultural practices. He affirmed that the current administration will leave no stone unturned to protect farmers and their investments in the sector.
