The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Cross River has confirmed that five people died and 24 were injured in a crash that occurred in Ogoja Local Government Area. Sector Commander Mr. Abdullahi Hassan told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone interview from Calabar that the accident happened at about 12:41 p.m. on Saturday in the Abakpa community of Ogoja.
According to Hassan, the vehicle involved was a Mercedes‑Benz tipper carrying 31 passengers to a burial ceremony. The driver lost control after a tyre burst. Among the victims were 29 male adults, one female adult and one female child. Of the 31 occupants, 24 male adults sustained injuries, two passengers – the female adult and the female child – escaped unharmed, and five male adults were killed.
Three of the deceased were taken to the mortuary, while the injured were transported to General Hospital Ogoja by FRSC officials. The remaining two bodies were retrieved by relatives at the scene of the accident.
