The Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, has said the decision of the resident electoral commissioner (REC) of the state, Yunusa Ari, to declare a winner in the governorship supplementary election is “illegal and provocative”.

Fintiri has now called on President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene, urging him not to “shy away from this”.

He said: “We call on him to make a statement, we call on him to take a decision. I believe he will not be party to this.”

Fintiri, who is the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, stated this during a press conference on Sunday at the state house in Yola, Adamawa State capital.

Ari had earlier declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Aisha ‘Binani’ Dahiru, as the winner of the election.

Mele Lamido, the returning officer for the governorship election, is the INEC official empowered by law to declare the winner.
