United Nations Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres condemned the recent clashes in Sudan, which have claimed dozens of civilian lives, including three employees of the UN World Food Programme. In a statement, the UN chief’s spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, said Guterres “strongly condemns the deaths and injuries of civilians, including the death of three staff members of the World Food Programme in North Darfur, with a further two seriously injured,” and called for those responsible to be brought to justice without delay.
Guterres also reiterated his demand for an immediate halt to the fighting and a return to dialogue. He emphasized that he remains in contact with regional leaders and Sudanese stakeholders “to find a way out of this crisis.” The Secretary‑General reminded all parties of their obligations under international law, including the duty to ensure the safety and security of United Nations personnel, their premises, and their assets.
Diplomatic sources told AFP that the UN Security Council plans to discuss the situation in Sudan at a closed‑door meeting on Monday. The fighting, which has raged for two days between the Sudanese armed forces and the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, has killed at least 56 civilians and triggered regional concern, prompting neighboring Egypt and Chad to close their borders with Sudan.
