The Majority Leader of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Hon. Victor Chukwu, dismissed the circulating rumor that Governor David Umahi had approached the House for a N33 billion loan as false and mischievous. Speaking to journalists in Abakaliki on Sunday night, Chukwu said the allegation was the handiwork of a desperate opposition in the state.
He emphasized that Governor Umahi never sought any loan from the House, especially not a month before the end of his tenure. “For the record, the Ebonyi State Government has never approached the House of Assembly for any loan, let alone a N33 billion request,” Chukwu asserted. He noted that the rumor appeared after a social‑media post by Chika Nwoba, the Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ebonyi, and stressed that the government has never written to the House for loans of N1 billion, N5 billion, N10 billion, or N20 billion.
Chukwu condemned the opposition’s “extremism,” arguing that it is easy for critics to blame the government for any problem. He questioned why the false claim of a N33 billion loan request was being propagated and stressed that it had no basis in fact. “I sincerely frown upon this rumor, especially since my name is being mentioned,” he said, adding that he serves as the bridge between the government and the Assembly.
He pointed out the impracticality of such a request, given that the administration is set to end in May and currently carries little or no debt—no outstanding obligations to contractors, civil servants, or anyone else. “It is ludicrous to suggest that the Ebonyi Government approached the House for a N33 billion loan,” Chukwu concluded, labeling the rumor as false, misleading, and orchestrated by a desperate opposition.
