President Museveni condemned the deteriorating security situation in Sudan, where fighting has erupted between the government army and paramilitary forces. In a statement on Sunday, he called the violence a misuse of force that undermines the progress achieved in recent months of dialogue. “We cannot keep papering over the mistakes of unprincipled politics year after year. An unconditional and immediate cessation of hostilities to stop the tragedy and mockery of Africa is of utmost importance,” Museveni said.

The conflict escalated late last week when the Sudanese army clashed with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group, marking the climax of growing tensions between military leader Abdel Fattah al‑Burhan and his deputy, paramilitary commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. The dispute centers on the planned integration of the RSF into the regular army. At least 56 people have been reported killed, many more injured, and several installations in the capital, Khartoum, have been destroyed.

In his remarks, President Museveni described the fighting as senseless. “Barring any illegitimate aim to cause instability, the issue of timing for merging warring factions into the national army can be determined scientifically, using agreed‑upon parameters such as health, education, training, or age of personnel. Using this as an excuse to fight is wrong,” he said. He warned that combat in densely populated Khartoum will cause unnecessary deaths that could have been avoided. “If there is an absolute need to fight, it is irresponsible to place such action in a populated area such as Khartoum. This must stop immediately, as it places a heavy burden on the people and the future.”

The Ugandan president emphasized that Sudan does not belong to either warring faction but to its people. “The ultimate arbitration on political issues and determination of governance should be returned to the people in an election.” Museveni has previously urged military leader Abdel Fattah al‑Burhan to organize elections in Sudan.
