Two prominent politicians from the North‑West have thrown their weight behind Senator Barau Jibrin as the 10th National Assembly’s Senate President. Senators Danladi Sankara and El‑Jibrin Doguwa revealed their support for Barau at separate press conferences in Kano State on Monday.
Sankara, the current Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information, and former Senator Doguwa, both APC stakeholders from the North‑West geopolitical zone, argued that Barau Jibrin—a senior senator representing Kano North senatorial district—is the most suitable candidate for the Senate presidency. Sankara said, “Barau Jibrin is humble, possesses the leadership qualities and experience to steer the Senate. He has built bridges across party lines and cultivated a positive attitude in the chamber, making him worthy of the top position. Even though many factors will play out on the Senate floor, I believe Jibrin belongs to everyone in the Senate, and I have no doubt he will be considered. I assure you of my support and the mobilization of my network for him.”
In a separate press conference, Doguwa argued that the Senate is well‑placed to rally support for Barau’s candidacy, provided the APC zones the position to the North‑West. He said, “I have known Barau Jibrin for years and can attest to his capacity and tenacity to provide purposeful leadership. He commands great respect from his colleagues as a ranking member and is a grassroots mobilizer. If God wills it, Barau’s turn to become Senate President will be fine. However, my support for Al‑Hassan Ado Doguwa to become Speaker of the House of Representatives remains unchanged. The responsibility now lies with our party and its zoning principles; we are ready to obey the party’s directive on zoning.”
