Nairobi — Arsenal, the English Premier League leaders, are launching a sustainability initiative to plant more than 20,000 trees in Kenya. The forest will be established in Bore, Kilifi County, on the coastal region, and the club has already hired local staff to begin the work.
The club explained that the trees are intended to offset the resources used and the carbon emissions generated by printing the Arsenal Matchday Programme. As the trees mature, they will absorb carbon from the atmosphere, provide habitats for birds, bees and other wildlife, and eventually supply a community of impoverished African subsistence farmers with a valuable timber cash crop. This timber will help compensate for the large amount of paper required for the programme distributed at each home game.
Arsenal also highlighted that 60 women workers from the remote Bore community have been employed to cultivate the seedlings. The area, located in Kenya’s Coast Province, is increasingly vulnerable to extreme weather events such as droughts and floods, making the project’s support especially crucial.
