Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola launched a five‑year strategic plan to improve internal security across Nigeria. Speaking at the unveiling of the Ministry’s Five Year Strategic Plan and its Services/Board in Abuja, Aregbesola emphasized that the plan will build on the Ministry’s strengths and its capacity to address the critical challenges confronting the nation’s internal security.
“The Ministry of Interior is integral to national security and prosperity in ways many do not readily grasp,” the Minister said. He highlighted the four key services under the Ministry—Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigeria Correctional Service, and the Federal Fire Service—as essential to the security of any nation and the well‑being of its people. While acknowledging ongoing challenges, Aregbesola noted that thousands of potential crises are resolved daily, preventing chaos.
Aregbesola stressed the need for a holistic, long‑term plan to enhance the operations of these agencies and other arms of the Ministry, enabling them to fulfill their missions more effectively. He pointed out that, until now, the Ministry had operated without a strategic plan, resulting in a lack of synergy and gaps in security management. The new Five Year Strategic Plan provides a clear, executable roadmap that defines the Ministry’s future direction and underpins the essential coordination required to achieve its core mandate of effective internal security management and citizenship integrity.
The strategic plan was reviewed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Shuaib Belgore.
