EPL: Chelsea willing to let World Cup star leave Stamford Bridge

Chelsea are not prepared to stop their star player Mateo Kovacic from leaving the club this summer.

The Evening Standard reports that the Blues are willing to let the player leave and are not willing to offer him a new contract extension.

The Croatia international’s current deal at Stamford Bridge expires at the end of next season when he would be able to leave as a free agent.

The Blues want to trim their squad, which currently has over 30 players, and balance the books after their spending spree under Todd Boehly.

In the last two transfer windows, the Blues have spent upwards of £500 million to sign a total of 18 players.

According to 90min, Liverpool are poised to hold talks with the player’s representatives.

The 2022 World Cup semi-finalist has featured in 33 games across competitions for the Blues this season, wearing the captain’s armband thrice.

The Croatia international knows that he will get opportunities at Liverpool if he were to join them this summer.

The Reds are in desperate need of a midfield revamp, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner and Naby Keita on contracts that expire this summer.
