The Nigerian Bar Association has concluded plans to open a pro bono centre to offer free legal services to the indigent.
The association’s President, Yakubu Maikyau, while making the disclosure, said that without institutions to deliver justice, there would be no country.
Maikyau stated this in a speech he delivered at the Launch of Justice Needs and Satisfaction report on Tuesday, April 25, in Abuja organised by the Hague Institution for Innovation of Law.
He highlighted the importance of justice while giving feedback on the report.
The president also sought a partnership between the NBA and the HiiL to strengthen the judiciary.
Maikyau said, “Nigeria has a constitution and laws enacted pursuant to the constitution. What is more important is the thought behind the need for justice. Justice is important for our existence as a nation.”
Quoting Uthman Dan Fodio, Maikyau said, “A people can exist without religion but a people cannot exist without justice.’’
He commended the HiiL for meeting people to check their peculiar needs and advising them on how to access Justice.
He further appreciated the Legal Aid Council for recognising Prof
Chimezie Ikeazor, SAN, and naming the Legal Aid Council headquarters building after him in recognition of his contributions to the establishment of the council.
