Court sentences ‘Yahoo boy’ to prison over love scam in Kaduna

A Kaduna State High Court has sentenced an Internet fraudster, Joshua Audu, to one-year imprisonment for involving in a love scam.

Mr Audu was charged to court by the Kaduna Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on one count charge.

The defendant, who was arrested by the Kaduna State Vigilance Service, KADVS, at the Brooklyn Hotel, Narayi Barnawa Kaduna, on suspicion of involvement in cybercrime and handed over to the commission for further investigation, allegedly used a social media platform, Google Chat, to defraud victims whom he professed love to.

He also received money and gift cards as proceeds of his illicit act.

In a statement posted on its social media platform, the EFCC said the defendant pleaded guilty to the charge.

The presiding judge, A.A. Bello, therefore sentenced him to one year imprisonment with an option of N150,000 fine.

He was also ordered to forfeit his Redmi 7 and iPhone 11 mobile devices to the federal government.
