How traditional rulers can be protected from governors – Shehu Sani

A former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has revealed how traditional rulers can be protected from the governors of their respective states.

Sani advocated on Twitter that traditional rulers need constitutional protection so as to be independent like judges.

Unless there is such constitutional protection, Sani held that Emirs, Obas and other monarchs would continue to live at the mercy of governors.

Media Talk Africa reports that monarchs in their various communities are under the control of governors, who have absolute powers over their appointment and removal.

Monarchs, no matter how powerful, exalted or influential they may be, are always careful to avoid the wrath of their governors, who may order their suspension or total removal from their stools.

Recall that an Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, was in 2020 deposed by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje for his constant criticism of the government in power.

Sani suggested that monarchs should have some level of independence when he said: “Until traditional rulers are constitutionally protected like Judges, they will continue to live at the mercy and pleasure of state Governors.”
