Lagos police unveil special committee on gender, sexual-based violence

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Idowu Owohunwa, on Friday, unveiled a special committee to establish a centre for domestic, gender and sexual-based violence.

Owohunwa said the committee comprised different NGOs that were into gender, domestic and sexual-based violence issues in Lagos State.

He said the command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, and the Officers in Charge of the Gender Unit, Medical and Works were members of the committee.

Owohunwa said the committee was set up with a view to having a befitting centre under the command, where the crimes mentioned would have all the attention and investigations they deserved.

He said the mandate of the committee included to work out and design a centre or work on the existing one to reflect the purposes for the unit.

The police boss said the committee would also design the protocols, standard operating procedures and act as open outreach that would encourage public support against the crimes.

Owohunwa said the committee, after establishing the centre, would train the personnel that would work at the place, reach out to the stakeholders and connect to the Lagos State agency handling similar matters.

He noted that the new centre by the committee was a further step and commitment by the command on war against domestic, gender and sexual-based violence in Lagos State.
