NAF begins probe as fire guts Abuja facility

The Nigerian Air Force on Wednesday said it has commenced an investigation to unravel the immediate and remote causes of the fire that broke out at its facility in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

According to NAF, the affected fuel facility, a Jet A-1 fuel dump, located on Bill Clinton Drive within the NAF Base, is owned by Messer Geometrics Synergy Services Limited under a Build, Operate and Transfer ownership agreement.

Responding to an inquiry on the fire in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Wednesday, the Head of Operations, FFF FCT, Amiola Adebayo, said firefighters worked hard to completely put out the fire.

“The fire gutted part of the NAF Base, and our men helped in putting out the fire. However, I can’t confirm the cause of the fire outbreak yet, but we will put out a statement once our findings are concluded,” Adebayo said.

Meanwhile, the Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF, Ayodele Famuyiwa, in a statement on Wednesday, said an investigation had commenced to unravel the cause of the incident.

“Though located on NAF premises, the fuel facility is owned and operated by Messer Geometrics Synergy Services Limited under a ‘Build, Operate and Transfer’ ownership agreement.

“The fire, which created an explosion from the fuel tanks, has since been put out by the combined efforts of Fire Services from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Federal Capital Territory Administration, the Federal Fire Service, and the NAF Fire Service.

“It is gratifying to note that no life was lost in the incident.
