A mass exodus of South Sudanese citizens from neighbouring Sudan has prompted the creation of a youth-led initiative to evacuate those trapped in Khartoum and relocate them to the border. The group of youths, who set up a coordinating office opposite the US Embassy in Juba, organised fundraising events and arranged for lorries to help with the relocation efforts. The intervention came after other countries started evacuating their citizens from Khartoum, causing the group to question why the South Sudanese were not receiving similar assistance.
Charitable contributions are being collected through local mobile money payment platform Mgurush to ensure transparent accounting. Although returnees have been relocated, inadequate shelter and accommodation have led some to proceed to the oil-rich town of Palouch or beyond. Individual South Sudanese, particularly businesspeople, have also organised evacuation efforts. The government eventually allocated 1 billion South Sudanese Pounds (approximately $7.6 million) to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to aid the refugees and transfer them back to their areas of origin, without plans to set up an IDP camp.
