Actor, lawyer, and politician Kenneth Okonkwo has criticized the Lagos State Police for their treatment of singer Seun Kuti following his arrest. The police had shared images of Kuti handcuffed and barefooted on social media, prompting widespread condemnation of the force. Responding to the criticism, the Nigerian Police Public Relations Officer explained that such actions were standard procedure before an individual’s detention. However, Okonkwo argued that it was unlawful to handcuff Kuti after he had voluntarily surrendered himself. Citing section 5(a) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015, Okonkwo insisted that a person who submits themselves to the police cannot be presumed to be violent or plotting an escape. He added that it was essential to uphold the rule of law, regardless of who was involved.
