Falconets to Kick Off WAFU B U-20 Women’s Championship Against Niger

The U-20 women’s national team of Nigeria, the Falconets, are set to face Niger Republic in the opening match of Group B at this year’s WAFU B U-20 Women’s Championship in Kumasi on Sunday. The tournament will witness seven member countries competing for regional glory from May 20 until June 2023 in Ghana.

Ghana, Benin, and Cote d’Ivoire are grouped in Group A, while Group B features Nigeria, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Togo. The Falconets arrived in Kumasi on Thursday and trained at the Baba Yara Stadium the following day.

Head coach Chris Danjuma included some players from the bronze medal-winning U-17 girls’ team from last year’s U-17 Women’s World Cup in India and the best names who steered Nigeria to a last-eight finish at the U-20 Women’s World Cup finals in Costa Rica in August 2022.

The match between the Falconets and Niger will commence at 3 PM Nigeria time, with the second match of the group beginning at 6 PM between Burkina Faso and Togo.

The Falconets will play their second group match against Togo at 6 PM on Wednesday, May 24, while Niger Republic will face Burkina Faso at 3 PM on the same day.

The group stage matches will conclude on Sunday, May 28, with Nigeria clashing with Burkina Faso at the Paa Joe Stadium. At the same time, Togo and Niger Republic will play simultaneously at the Baba Yara Stadium.

All is set as fans wait patiently for the start of the tournament.
