Community leaders in Obeagu, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State have refuted the recent election of a new traditional ruler and President General (PG), describing them as fake and misleading. The reported election of Chief Sylvester Okolo and Callistus Orjiogbu as PG were branded null and void by the community leaders, warning that it could lead to confusion.
The leaders who signed a statement added that the community has not officially installed a new monarch based on the chieftaincy constitution gazetted at the Ministry of Chieftaincy Matters, Enugu State. They also claimed that the election of Chief Sylvester Okolo via the Option A4 system by unlawful individuals and their cohorts is unacceptable.
According to the statement, the process of selecting a new monarch has been indefinitely postponed by the Ministry of Chieftaincy Matters, Enugu state since May 16, 2023, following the community’s disunity and the non-compliance of some individuals with the ministry’s directives.
The community leaders noted that the Obeagu chieftaincy constitution recognizes the selection process as a means of choosing their traditional rulers, and the use of the election system is prohibited.
Furthermore, the leaders clarified that Ogbuefi Anslem Aniokete is the actual PG of the Obeagu Town Union (OTU) and the Secretary General of the Town Union is Mr Ferdinand Ejimofor, while Callistus Orjiogbu, parading himself as the new PG of the OBEAGU Town Union, is a fake and was never elected by the town.
