Entertainment industry struggles with 215 billion piracy site visits

Over the years, online piracy has remained a significant challenge for content creators and distributors in the entertainment industry. According to a recent report by Muso, a piracy analytics company, online piracy continues to soar, causing significant losses for the industry. The study revealed that piracy sites received a staggering 215 billion visits in 2020 alone, which marks an increase of 4.4% from the previous year.

The report analyzed over 100,000 piracy sites globally, including streaming, torrenting, and direct-download platforms. The United States had the highest number of visits to piracy sites, followed by Russia, India, and Brazil. The report also indicated that the lockdowns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to the increase in piracy site visits.

The entertainment industry globally has been recording significant revenue losses due to piracy, with some content creators and distributors finding it challenging to break even. The report further revealed that film piracy accounted for the highest number of visits to piracy sites, followed by television shows, music, and video games.

Despite the efforts of industry stakeholders and governments to tackle online piracy, the problem continues to persist. Content creators and distributors have been advocating for more stringent measures to combat piracy, including blocking piracy sites and imposing sanctions on countries that continue to harbor them. In Nigeria, the government and industry stakeholders have made significant efforts to curb online piracy. However, they are yet to make a significant impact, with piracy sites still able to operate without any significant challenge.

The increase in online piracy is a significant concern for the entertainment industry as it makes it difficult for content creators and distributors to recoup their investments. It also raises concerns regarding the quality of pirated content, which may be unsafe for consumers. It is crucial for governments and industry stakeholders to collaborate and enforce regulations that can tackle online piracy effectively. With concerted efforts, the industry can reduce piracy, provide quality content, and sustain revenue streams.

It is essential to note that online piracy can have adverse effects on mental health and wellbeing. The Nigerian government and industry stakeholders must, therefore, find a balance between fighting piracy and ensuring that citizens do not resort to self-harm and suicide.
