NLC Dismisses Reports of Planned Strike over Fuel Subsidy Removal

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has dismissed reports claiming that it plans to embark on a strike following the recent removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government.

Benson Upah, Head of Information and Public Affairs at the NLC, made the declaration on Thursday in Abuja, urging members of the public to disregard the stories in the rumour mill as they did not emanate from the Congress.

“Our attention has been drawn to stories circulating in the social media claiming that the NLC will begin protest action on June 2 against the increase in the pump price of petrol.

“In as much as we are outraged by this mindless price increase, which is intended to bring untold hardship to Nigerians, we have no plan to start any action on June 2,” he stated.

Mr Upah went on to assure Nigerians that although organ meetings to deliberate on the issue have been slated for June 2, the NLC has no plans to commence strike action at this time. He promised that the public will be kept informed of the NLC’s next line of action.

This announcement comes as a relief to many Nigerians, who have been grappling with rising inflation and hardship in the face of the recent fuel subsidy removal.

The NLC, however, emphasized that it will continue to engage the Federal Government and other stakeholders on a more lasting solution to the fuel pricing crisis.

It remains to be seen how the government will respond to the growing public uproar against the recent fuel subsidy removal.
