UEFA Charge AS Roma’s Manager Jose Mourinho for Referee Abuse During Europa League Final

UEFA has initiated disciplinary proceedings against AS Roma’s Manager, Jose Mourinho, for using abusive and insulting language against a referee during the Europa League final. Mourinho received a yellow card from referee Anthony Taylor during the bad-tempered match, which eventually ended in a 1-1 draw, with Sevilla winning on penalties. Mr. Mourinho criticized Taylor in a post-match conference and later verbally abused him in a profanity-laced tirade in the stadium car park.

Furthermore, both Sevilla and Roma are up against charges of team misconduct and their supporters’ actions. The two clubs are charged with throwing objects, lighting fireworks, and improper team behavior. Sevilla also has an invasion of the field of play charge, while Roma has the vandalism and crowd-related incidents to defend themselves against.

The final was characterized by an unusually high number of fouls, prompting Taylor to issue 13 yellow cards, seven of them to Roma players. The English referee was also targeted by angry Roma fans at Budapest Airport, together with his family. An Italian man was charged with affray in the aftermath of the incident.

The PGMOL, referees’ body, expressed shock at the abuse meted out on Taylor on his way home from Hungary. Meanwhile, it was a shocking loss for the AS Roma’s manager Mourinho, who had never lost a European final before, and a landmark victory for Sevilla, securing their seventh Europa League trophy.
