Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State has granted pardon to 80 inmates across various correctional centres in the state on account of the 2023 Democracy Day celebration. He further explained that the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy had recommended the release of the inmates based on grounds of old age, ill health, and good behaviour.

Usman also advised the pardoned inmates to desist from acts that could lead them back to prison and embrace legitimate endeavours by taking advantage of various empowerment windows. He emphasized the need for the people of the state to reflect on their role in peace-building and support for good governance while renewing their commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and imbibing tolerance, patriotism and discipline.

The SSG highlighted that the government was seriously concerned about the security challenges in the state and fully prepared to tackle the situation. He further assured the citizens of Niger State that the government would ensure that dividends of democracy are felt in all corners of the state.

Nigerians have commended Governor Bago’s act of magnanimity and called on other governors to emulate him. The release of the inmates will undoubtedly create a positive impact on the state and contribute to the growth of democracy in Nigeria.

It is hoped that other state governments will use such occasions as opportunities to extend gestures that will positively impact the lives of citizens and demonstrate the spirit of true democracy.
