The International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) has extended congratulations to Nigerians on the occasion of the country’s 2023 Democracy Day. The Ambassador at Large and Head of Diplomatic Mission of the IHRC to Nigeria, H.E. Ambassador Dr. Duru Hezekiah, issued a statement through his Head of Media and Strategic Communications, Fidelis Onakpoma, urging Nigerians to use the opportunity to work towards establishing open, responsive, and accountable institutions and processes that afford everyone the opportunity to participate in governance and have their voices heard.

Ambassador Dr. Duru emphasised that countries with democratic freedoms tend to be more peaceful and prosperous and their citizens can enjoy their fundamental rights. He also urged President Tinubu to prioritise democracy and the rule of law, focusing on promoting human rights, enhancing access to justice, accountable and transparent governance, and providing responsive public service delivery to the needs and preferences of Nigerians.

The statement reveals that the IHRC has remained committed to promoting democracy and provided critical support to other African and European countries in strengthening their democratic and institutional resilience. The commission will continue to work towards democratic principles, acknowledging the role of good governance and human rights in sustainable development and enduring peace.

Ambassador Dr. Duru also recognised the bravery and sacrifices of the individuals who fought to end military dictatorship and usher in democracy in Nigeria, urging that their efforts should not be in vain. Finally, the ambassador wished Nigerians well on their democratic journey and hoped that God would continue to bless Nigeria.
