Angola to Establish Cybersecurity Academy to Protect Telecommunication Services and Information Technologies

In a speech at the 3rd edition of ANGOTIC 2023 in Luanda, President João Lourenço announced that Angola plans to install a cybersecurity academy to promote safe telecommunication services and information technologies. In addition to this, regulatory conditions for telecommunications networks will be created. The measures would strengthen cybersecurity, promoting trustworthy, secure, and efficient use of cyberspace by public and private entities in Angola.

President Lourenço also outlined a significant growth in the mobile telephone service by 55% and an internet access rate increase of 20% between 2021 and the first quarter of 2022. He emphasized the importance of technological modernization of public administration and regulation and innovation.

The emergence of dynamic, successful digital start-ups in Angola also underscores the strong youth entrepreneurship ecosystem in the country, with young talents receiving numerous international awards for innovation and economic impact.

The Angolan President also spoke of the crucial role in satellite imagery to support agriculture, oil production, land-use planning, mining, environment, migration control, and to address the problem of drought that recurrently devastates the South.

Efforts are being redoubled in partnership with other stakeholders to ensure user protection and defence of critical infrastructures and vital information services. The close collaboration between the private sector and the government led to a considerable evolution in the use of digital services ranging from industry to commerce, banking, insurance, energy, health, and companies with a strong inclination in a digital economy.
